At Goodwings, we take our responsibility seriously

At Goodwings, we recognize the need for transparency in everything we do. Not only do we hold ourselves to the highest standards as a business, but we also expect it from those within our own supply chain.

That's why we only invest in climate solutions that meet the strictest criteria, but also why we have built an advisory board of the leading and most trusted climate experts, to ensure that the information we receive is up to date and trustworthy.

 Biofuel

Biofuel is just like jet fuel...but sustainable

Biofuel or SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is like jet fuel...but sustainable. It is made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials such as used cooking oil. It is currently the best alternative to fossil-based jet fuel, and can be used to power planes without huge changes to existing infrastructure within the aviation industry.

By making biofuel an affordable option for business travelers, we’re helping them reduce their emissions by 25-100% on domestic trips, 10-50% on regional trips and 1-10% on long-haul at a considerably lower cost than purchasing directly through the airline.

8% of global emissions can be attributed to travel. Aviation makes up 2,5% of those.

 Industry challenge

The problem with the travel industry

Travel is a hard-to-abate industry, with aviation making up 2.5% of global GHG emissions. As it stands, air travel is not expected to be fully decarbonised until 2050, which means that we need to take a multifaceted approach to reducing and removing the billions of tonnes of CO2 that business travel creates.

The Paris Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol are based on two key points. Firstly, that we need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and replace these with renewable energy sources. But also that we must invest heavily in nature-based solutions that can absorb the large quantities of CO2 that we have already emitted and will continue to emit.

That's where Goodwings comes in.

For your business

We make it easy and affordable for you to neutralize your CO2 emissions with full transparency.

“Collecting data on our own was always extremely time consuming, and raised questions around the accuracy and validity of it. The Goodwings carbon calculator provides valid and transparent data which has given us new knowledge and insight into our CO2 emissions.”

 Carbon calculator

What goes into your emissions calculation

Our carbon calculator follows the guidance from the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard from the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

We use a number of sources to determine how much you've emitted on your business trip. Data from Google maps tells us how far you've traveled, while the emissions you generate based on your mode of transport (for example the difference between taking a train, plane or car) and the type of hotel you stay in, are averages from the UK Government Conversion Factors for Company Reporting (2020). We also neutralize the CO2 emissions from your meals, where we work on the assumption of 3 per day.

 Investing

How we invest in climate solutions on your company's behalf

When you book a hotel on Goodwings.com, we use our booking revenues to purchase biofuel on your behalf, removing any remaining emissions with nature-based removal offsets.

We also make sustainability reporting quick and easy by providing downloadable travel emissions data and transaction reports.

 Transparency

Our transparency guarantee

We know that our impact relies heavily on the suppliers we use, and that transparency is key to building trust with our clients. That's why we ensure that the partner we purchase our biofuel from is certified by the European Commission (ISS EU) and TÜV Nord for its carbon emission compensation processes, and our removal offsets are registered under the VCS program and validated by the Rainforest Alliance.

About biofuel

Biofuel or SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is like jet fuel...but sustainable. It is made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials such as used cooking oil. The biofuel (SAF) we purchase is certified according to the certification system of the European Commission (ISCC EU) and EU RED II, and our end-to-end processes have been audited by SGS and TÜV Nord.

About removal offsets

Removal offsets come from registered projects that physically remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it long-term, such as regenerative agriculture, new forest plantations, bio charcoal production and direct air capture technologies. Traceability is key with removal offsets, which is why our removal projects are registered under the VCS program and undergo rigorous third party assessment by the Rainforest Alliance.

"At the end of the day, carbon offsetting-even done to the highest standards with Goodwings - will only take us so far. Businesses still need to set ambitious climate targets and cut out unnecessary travel to reduce their emissions"
