7000 days of unavoidable business travel

With a global presence – with departments in the USA, Brazil, India, Turkey, and Germany, among others – and growth in the market, there is a need for many business trips at Danish Machine Manufacturer, Aasted. Christian Ingemann Hansen expects the total number of travel days for the group's salespeople, technicians, and engineers to reach 7,000 in 2025.

Aasted, which manufactures advanced production equipment for global chocolate and protein bar producers, chooses Goodwings, to combine necessary business travel, with the extensive sustainability suite, which will allow them to reach their ambitious reduction goals.

"There is a lot of expertise in assembling these enormous industrial machines. So, we must ensure that the systems are assembled correctly if they are to last 30-40 years. We can only do that by sending a team of technicians to our customers. So, we cannot avoid business trips, although we are actively trying to change our consumption to reduce CO2 emissions." says Christian Ingemann Hansen, Head of Aftersales and Customer Service, Aasted.

The problem

Plans to halve travel emissions in 10 years

Setting ambitious and achievable emission reduction goals is essential for modern businesses - but when travel is unavoidable, it's a difficult task. Aasted needs essential and easy-to-access emissions data to map and target hotspots, while identifying the changes needed to reach their goals.

Furthermore, operating and serving some of the largest businesses worldwide, Aasted also identified a true competitive advantage to be won, by facilitating their own ESG- and CSDR-reporting.

The company’s previous provider had two main issues to address:

  • A lack of flexibility - including not being able to book trips or make changes outside of working hours, which was not satisfactory for a company like Aasted, that needs to remain reactive to service requests.

  • A lack of easy access to data, analytics and insights on emissions from travel - as well as built-in behavior nudging and climate solutions, to truly accelerate progress towards the set goals.

With the platform, we can easily and effectively track whether we are on the right track or if we need to change more in our travel policy

The solution

Emissions analytics and climate solutions that create true competitive advantage

Through the Goodwings platform, Aasted can book their necessary business trips 24/7 – including flights, hotels, trains, and cars. But more importantly, the detailed data on emissions, benchmarks, and other indicators provide a clearer picture of travel emissions. Which helps with internal goals - and to drive competitive advantage as ESG- and CSDR- requirements are rolled out across Europe.

"We now have many more data points – far more than before. So now we can gradually start setting concrete goals in the Goodwings platform, which will guide how we travel with lower emissions. With the platform, we can easily and effectively track whether we are on the right track or if we need to change more in our travel policy," says Jesper Jerlang, Aasted's Head of Sustainability.

Mapping detailed data and using predictive technology

With Goodwings' real-time reporting, Aasted have a constant overview over their travel emissions - getting as detailed as calculating exact aircraft-specific emissions for each leg of each trip is essential in mapping real plans for change. With Goodwings' predictive tool, Aasted is also able to see emissions predictions for coming periods, based on real-time travel activity and history.

Behavioral nudging, with every booking

When data is mapped, having a tool that provides ground for collective behavioral change, is the most important tool is reaching ambitious climate goals. The Goodwings platform guides travelers towards more responsible travel decisions through nudging, customizable climate features in travel policies and more - truly driving gradual reductions in emissions from unavoidable business travel

Climate solutions, to reach ambitious goals

Halving emissions from unavoidable business travel in just 10 years is no easy (or cheap) feat. Goodwings provides Aasted with several co-financing options for climate solutions - such as a VCS (VERRA) verified reforestation project in Uruguay, or the direct investment in SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) through our end-to-end verified partnership with SQUAKE and NESTE. This means more affordability and availability of climate solutions, for Aasted.

Christian Ingemann Hansen
