How we calculate emissions
Making responsible choices for your company travel requires insight, especially if you're doing sustainability reporting.
💡 Here's everything you need to know about the travel emissions data we provide for you and your company.
Conversion factors 👩🏽💻
Our current dataset is based on the emissions factor framework chosen by your company when setting up your account. DEFRA's greenhouse gas reporting conversion factors is our standard reporting factor, but you will be able to choose from a variety of factors. We use this data to calculate the emissions from each part of your trip.
Data points 📈
We base your calculations on the following datapoints: - Distance traveled - Method of transportation - Engine type - Airplane type and age - Number of people travelling - Length of trip (days) - We include 3 meals a day per person
Calculation principles 🧮
To use the latest and most accurate data, we use principles produced by the GHG Protocol. They provide the Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard that is used by major companies worldwide.
Examples of flight emissions calculations ✈️
Haul | Haul calculation | Emission Factors | Example | Note | Source |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Short-haul | Flights under 500km | Economy (0.244 kg/km) | A 1000km flight is considered medium haul and emits 153 kg CO2 in economy class | Flight emissions include the RFI (Radiative Forcing Index) to account for the greater impact of high-altitude emissions | DEFRA 2020 Emission Conversion Factors |
Medium-haul | Flights between 500km and 3700km | Economy (0.153 kg/km) | |||
Business Class (0.229 kg/km) | |||||
Long-haul | Flights over 3700km | Economy (0.139 kg/km) First Class (0.557 kg/km) |
Examples of other emissions calculations ✈️
Formula | Factor | Example | Source | |
Hotel | CO2e Emission factor x Number of nights | 31kg CO2 per night | A 3-night stay results in 93kg CO2 emissions | Global hotel emission averages |
Dining | CO2e emission factor x Number of meals | 3kg CO2 per meal | Three meals daily for 3 days equals 27kg CO2e | Global food industry averages |
Car | CO2e emission factor x Distance in km | Diesel (0.168 kg/km), Petrol (0.174 kg/km), Hybrid (0.116 kg/km), Electric (0.057 kg/km) | A petrol car driving 100km emits 17.4kg CO2e | DEFRA 2020 Emission Conversion Factors |
Bus | CO2e emission Factor x Distance in km | Local bus (0.103 kg/km), Coach bus (0.027 kg/km) | A 50km coach bus ride emits 1.35kg CO2e | DEFRA 2020 Emission Conversion Factors |
Rail | CO2 emission factor x distance in km | National (0.037 kg/km), International (0.005 kg/km), Light Rail (0.030 kg/km) | A 200 km national rail trip emits 7.4 kg CO2e. | DEFRA 2020 Emission Conversion Factors |
